There's no universal laser. We now run two commarker machines side by side. The b6 does the metal work. The Omni X UV does color on acrylic. Trying to cram both jobs into one machine would have produced mediocre results — and I'd probably be back to outsourcing the half that the machine couldn't handle well.
One context caveat: this worked for us because we're a specific kind of operation — 12-person shop, predictable order volume, a product mix that's roughly 70% metal and 30% acrylic. If you're a solo Etsy seller doing acrylic keychains, this doesn't apply the same way. If you're a 200-person factory, you probably need higher-throughput equipment. But the TCO method — audit your real spend, compare configured prices, and ask every vendor what their machine can't do — works at any scale.
Bottom line: I didn't buy a laser because I wanted one. I bought it because the spreadsheet was undeniable. The 11-month payback just confirmed what the numbers said all along.
